Advances, Challenges and Future Directions in Sunscreen & Photoprotection

LECTURE

Sunscreen and photoprotection strategies have evolved significantly beyond simple ultraviolet B (UVB) sunburn prevention. Advances now emphasize broad-spectrum ultraviolet A (UVA) coverage, protection against visible light and infrared radiation, and incorporation of antioxidants and DNA repair enzymes to mitigate molecular damage. Innovative formulations have improved cosmetic acceptability and inclusivity, enhancing patient adherence. However, challenges persist, including regulatory disparities, environmental concerns, systemic absorption debates, and inadequate real-world application. Emerging directions focus on next-generation filters, biologic photoprotection, personalized strategies, and integration of digital health technologies.
