Wound Care for Neuropathic Ulcers: Actual Experience from a Leprosy Custodial Ward

LECTURE

Leprosy remains a significant cause of peripheral neuropathy and disability in endemic areas. Sensory loss, motor impairment, and autonomic dysfunction predispose affected individuals to chronic wounds, particularly plantar ulcers. Effective wound care in leprosy is essential to prevent infection, disabilities, and amputation. Management strategies focus on early detection, pressure offloading, regular wound debridement, infection control, and appropriate dressings.  Patient education on self-care practices, protective footwear, and daily inspection of anesthetic limbs plays a critical role in prevention and recurrence reduction.
