SUPPORT GROUPS
The primary purpose of support groups is to provide a safe, confidential space for individuals facing similar, often challenging, life situations to share experiences, exchange practical coping strategies, and receive mutual emotional support. They aim to reduce isolation, build community, and empower members through shared understanding.
- Emotional Support and Validation: Members offer encouragement, reduce feelings of stigma, and provide comfort, ensuring individuals feel less alone in their struggle.
- Shared Knowledge and Coping Skills: Participants exchange information, tips, and practical advice for managing daily challenges, which is often derived from lived experience.
- Safe Space for Expression: They provide a non-judgmental environment to discuss personal, intense feelings and experiences.
- Empowerment and Social Connection: Groups help members become proactive in managing their situations, acting as role models for each other to foster resilience and social connection.
- Improved Well-being: By reducing loneliness and stress, these groups help members gain perspective and improve their overall mental health.
While some support groups are professionally facilitated, many are peer-led, focusing on mutual aid rather than clinical treatment.
Hansen’s Disease (HD) Club
Support and education program for patients with Hansen’s Disease.
Hansen’s Disease (commonly known as leprosy) is a slow-moving bacterial infection that primarily affects the skin and nerves. While it has a frightening historical reputation, modern medicine has made it a manageable and fully curable condition.
PSOR Club
Support group for patients with psoriasis, focusing on education, treatment adherence, and quality of life.
Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious skin condition where your body’s immune system gets a bit too “excited”. Instead of protecting you from germs, it mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells.
Eczema Club
Support group for patients with atopic and contact dermatitis, emphasizing long-term disease management and education.
Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a condition that makes your skin dry, red, and extremely itchy. Think of it as your skin’s protective “security system” being a little too sensitive.
